Lots of estates coming and going, too much to photograph and list, as they come and go quickly!!! Also we crashed our 2 computers and after buying new ones found out we had to spend THOUSANDS $$$$$ more to upgrade our website software! So not a lot of new listings until then. Trust us to have the same caliber of stuff we have listed coming and going!

(scroll down below the propaganda and small print for images of our newest things)

National Public Radio called us "Vermont's must see"! And look and see our CNN profile here

Stop and see why. I hope you enjoy this webshot of our shop. Poke around and let us know what you think. Remember lots of stuff coming and going everyday, come and revel in the chaos with us!

OUR GUARANTEE - For items purchased off the website we have a 7 day unconditional, no ifs, ands or buts, satisfaction guaranteed policy. If after receiving a piece, it doesn't work, send it back for a complete refund, just let us know within 7 days . We also have an unconditional exchange policy, regardless of how long you've had an item, we will apply 100% of the purchase price of any piece towards an upgrade or exchange, or if you like we'll take it back and give you a 100% store credit. I don't think we could make it any easier!

SHIPPING - Is never a problem, we ship everyday, for less then you would imagine. We have our own truck for deliveries here on the East Coast and reliable professionals we use for Europe, The Far East, California, Florida and all points in-between. We have over 20 years experience in safe and economical delivering .

ABOUT OUR WEBSITE - We do the web-site stuff ourselves and it is very very very demanding time wise. The reality is that most things sell before we can even finish the pictures, particularly the best stuff. The pieces we list here represent only a FRACTION of our inventory, but it will give you an idea of the wide variety of marvelous art, antiques, fine furniture, jewelry and just plain fun, usable stuff we typically have on hand, AND WE GET NEW THINGS EVERYDAY!!!!! So e-mail us with your requests !

ABOUT US AND THE SHOP - We are much more then a website! We have an old school, brick and mortar, open shop (a fast disappearing breed), where buying, selling, appraising, educating and talking about antiques, art, jewelry and cultural artifacts is all we do, period, full time, everyday, for over 30 years. We have a constant stream of people bringing us stuff and we get requests to come look at new things everyday. Being in the Antiques business these days demands that one of us is constantly on the road, doing pickups, deliveries, appraisals, in home consultations, meeting with restorers and conservationists and traveling to specialized libraries and collections for research. We are the third generation of a family tradition and are unquestionably one of the busiest shops in Vermont! The next time your in New England please be sure to stop here in Manchester Vermont to check out our little slice of heaven.

In excellent condition, a small flick to bare wood on bottom less then 1/64th of an inch. . Pre 1868. In the shape of a folded letter (perhaps to indicate love letter), with conforming interior tray. Exterior is soft black with design in gold of the Owasawara crest and of two characters; interior is nashiji (sprinkled gold) throughout.
On interior of lid is a label, c. 1890s, placed by an earlier collector: "This represents a Japanese knot. Daimio (lord) Owasawara, Yeddo." Yeddo is the old spelling of Edo, modern Tokyo. The daimyo of "Shoen"——landed estates (not unlike medieval manors in the West)——numbered in the thousands [Collcutt et al, Cultural Atlas of Japan, 1988].

"Yeddo" indicates the Edo (Tokyo) residence of this lord, since during Tokugawa Shogunate feudal lords were required to spend part of each year in residence at the capital. This piece was made to be used in the household of the lord of Owasawara, and was not made for market. #67-7027-3050
